NAIROBI — September 28, 2026 | AFROQAST Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote is making another major move — this time in East Africa. Dangote is preparing to expand his industrial footprint into Kenya, with plans for a massive refinery and petrochemical complex in Lamu The proposed facility is expected to process approximately 700,000 barrels of oil per day potentially making it one of Africa’s largest refining operations. The move comes as Dangote continues expanding beyond his massive refinery operation in Nigeria. Why This Matters for Africa For decades, many African countries have exported crude oil while importing expensive refined petroleum products. Projects like Dangote’s proposed Kenya refinery could begin changing that equation by increasing the continent’s ability to refine, process and potentially export higher-value energy products from within Africa. The project could also strengthen East Africa’s energy infrastructure, create jobs and position Kenya as a larger regional petroleum hub. But large industrial projects also bring questions surrounding financing, environmental impact, local communities and how much of the economic benefit ultimately remains within African economies. Dangote Is Thinking Continental Kenya is only part of a broader expansion. Dangote-linked investments and proposed infrastructure projects are increasingly stretching across African markets, while the Nigerian Dangote Refinery itself continues pursuing expansion and new investment. The bigger story may therefore be larger than one refinery. Can African-owned industrial giants build the infrastructure needed to reduce Africa’s dependence on imported fuel and manufactured products? Dangote appears determined to find out.
