Kabila's New Power Structure: Who Are the Leaders of the FRN? GOMA, DR CONGO — October 15, 2026 The Democratic Republic of Congo has entered a new phase of political confrontation following the announcement of the **Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN)**, a political-military movement led by former President Joseph Kabila. Established on October 12, 2026, in Goma, the new coalition brings together influential figures from the former Congo River Alliance (AFC) and the M23 rebellion, creating a leadership structure that combines political experience, rebel organization and military command. The FRN has declared its intention to challenge President Félix Tshisekedi's government, including through the possible use of force. Joseph Kabila — President At the top of the organization stands Joseph Kabila, who governed DR Congo from 2001 to 2019. His appointment marks a dramatic political comeback. After years of rivalry with his successor, Kabila now leads a movement that includes armed groups fighting the Congolese government. His position gives the coalition a former head of state with extensive political experience and connections. Bertrand Bisimwa — First Vice-President Bertrand Bisimwa, a prominent political leader of the M23 rebellion, occupies the first vice-presidency in several published leadership lists. His inclusion connects the new movement to the M23's established political organization and its influence in eastern Congo. Corneille Nangaa — Second Vice-President Corneille Nangaa, formerly president of Congo's Independent National Electoral Commission, became a leading figure in the AFC coalition. His role involves coordinating the movement's administrative and organizational leadership. Benjamin Mbonimpa — Deputy Secretary-General Benjamin Mbonimpa serves as Deputy Secretary-General and Deputy Coordinator of the Executive Committee. Previously involved in the AFC/M23 peace negotiations, his appointment gives the new organization a figure familiar with diplomatic discussions. Désiré Rukomera — Permanent Secretary of the Founders' Council Désiré Rukomera Rwigema has been appointed Permanent Secretary of the College of Founders. His position is associated with the movement's founding institutional structure. What Does the FRN Want? According to its founding declaration, the FRN aims to challenge what it describes as political repression, corruption, institutional decline and insecurity under President Tshisekedi. The coalition promises national reconciliation, institutional reform, better governance and more equitable management of Congo's resources. These are the movement's stated objectives, not independently established assessments of the government's conduct. 🇨🇩 Tshisekedi Faces Pressure Over Constitutional Reform KINSHASA — September 17, 2026 President FÉLIX TSHISEKEDI is facing growing political opposition over proposed constitutional changes that could potentially allow him to seek another presidential term. Opposition groups organized protests in Kinshasa and other cities on September 15, while police used tear gas and warning shots to disperse some demonstrators. TSHISEKEDI says constitutional reform should ultimately be decided by the Congolese people through a referendum. His government is also dealing with ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, peace negotiations involving Rwanda, and the Ebola outbreak. # AFRIMMA 2026: African Music and Culture Take Over Dallas as the Awards Return **Dallas, Texas — September 12, 2026** — African music, fashion, entertainment and culture took center stage in Dallas as the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) returned for a highly anticipated 2026 edition following a two-year break. The celebration brought together artists, entertainers, creatives and members of the African diaspora for a day filled with live performances, cultural experiences and recognition of some of the continent's biggest talents. ## A New Era for AFRIMMA This year's event expanded beyond a traditional awards ceremony. AFRIMMA introduced a festival-style experience featuring music, food, fashion, art, vendors and entertainment, creating a larger celebration of African culture in the heart of Dallas. The AFRIMMA Music Fest took place at Annette Strauss Square at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, with activities beginning around noon and continuing into the evening. More than 100 artists and DJs were promoted as part of the festival experience, representing the diversity of African music and the global African diaspora. ## Major Artists Take the Stage Some of the major performers featured during the celebration included Nigerian stars **BNXN, Ruger, Victony, Kcee and Timaya**, alongside Ivorian rapper **Didi B** and Tanzanian star **Juma Jux**. The performances highlighted the growing international reach of Afrobeats, Amapiano and other African musical styles. ### Didi B Brings Côte d'Ivoire to Dallas Ivorian rapper **Didi B** was among the major international performers at the festival. His appearance added a strong Francophone African presence to an event that brought together artists from different regions of the continent. ## Nigeria Once Again Makes a Major Impact Nigeria entered AFRIMMA 2026 with one of the strongest groups of nominees. **Davido** led the nominations with five, competing in major categories including Artist of the Year, Best Male West Africa and Album of the Year for *5ive*. Other major Nigerian names connected to this year's awards included **Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Wizkid, Asake, BNXN, Ruger, Victony, Kcee and Timaya**. Nigeria's strong representation once again demonstrated the country's enormous influence on contemporary African music. ## East Africa Takes the Spotlight East African music also had a major presence at AFRIMMA 2026, with artists from Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and other countries competing for regional honors. ### Tanzania Tanzania had one of the strongest East African representations, with 11 artists and creatives receiving nominations. She competed against a strong field of comedians from Africa and the African diaspora. Her victory added another major Nigerian win to an evening celebrating African entertainment beyond music. ## Fashion, Food and African Culture AFRIMMA 2026 was also a celebration of African identity and creativity.
